Superfoods of Summer

From half-day Fridays to beach getaways, summer is the perfect time to take things slow and enjoy some much deserved time off. Unfortunately, for many of us, summer can also mean lots of less nutrient-rich foods to choose from such as oversized frozen cocktails, sugary carnival treats, and deep-fried seafood. When it comes to eating well in the summer, convenience is the key to make sure we’re still fueling with a balanced diet. We also want to take time to think about hydration with the intense heat and humidity. Below are my top 5 superfoods of summer that you can incorporate into your lifestyle.

Superfood #1: Tommy’s Superfoods Root Fusion

This product is great because it combines hearty root vegetables with a touch of sweetness from Fuji apples, making it the perfect way to sneak veggies into your kids’ summer meals. It is the ideal blend of flavors to keep your food interesting and delicious. Purchasing frozen veggies is one of my ideal ways to enjoy them as these veggies are picked at their peak ripeness and then flash-frozen, and by doing so the veggies retain their nutritional value.

Superfood #2: Tommy’s Superfoods Super Greens

I love bringing healthy dips to summer parties, especially when the dip is a bit healthier than people expect. Try adding Tommy’s Superfoods Super Greens with yogurt for a delicious dip. It goes well with carrots, broccoli, and peppers!

Recipe: Tommy’s Super Spinach Dip with Veggies

Ingredients:

*1 bag Tommy’s Superfoods Super Greens or Organic Super Greens

*1 cup non-fat plain yogurt

*Fresh carrots, broccoli, and peppers for dipping

Directions:

1. Cook Tommy’s Superfoods Super Greens on high in microwave for 5 minutes. Let cool to room temperature.

2. Add 1 cup plain yogurt. Stir until well mixed.

3. Dip with carrots or any crispy vegetable for a flavorful, healthy, protein-packed dip!

Superfood #3: BODYARMOR and BODYARMOR LYTE

Whether you’re refueling from a day full of games or sports outside or looking for some portable hydration, I like BODYARMOR because it has potassium-packed electrolytes, coconut water and vitamins – and no artificial flavors or sweeteners – unlike most other sports drinks.  It’s great for young athletes too.

You can also opt for BODYARMOR LYTE, which is the perfect complement to the original. It has all the same nutrients and natural ingredients – but only 20/cal per serving. And it’s naturally sweetened! BODYARMOR LYTE was created for those people who are looking for proper hydration with less calories – but don’t want all of the artificial ingredients found in a handful of lower calorie drinks. And it tastes amazing!

To help combat the dangers of dehydration, follow my hydration Rx when training:
*Pre-workout/game: 20 oz (2-3 cups) of fluid 1 hour before
*During: 5-10 ounces (about 1 cup) of fluid every 20 minutes
*Post-workout/game: 16-24 ounces of fluid (2-3 cups)

Superfood #4: Cherries

Cherries are portable, bite-size, and fun to eat fresh or frozen. They pack a potent nutritional punch. Cherries are rich in the antioxidant powerhouse “anthocyanin,” which helps fight inflammation and eases joint pain. The peak season for cherries is from May to August.

Superfood #5: Peaches

Peaches are loaded with bloat-fighting potassium, skin-enhancing vitamin C, and blood sugar controlling fiber — three nutrients that help you feel your summertime best. Enjoying a peach straight from the fruit bowl is always tasty. I also favor grilling peaches and then adding a serving of vanilla Greek yogurt and a sprinkling of cinnamon on top to make an indulgent, protein-rich dessert.
